I lay in Mav’s arms, spent, satiated, and sore. But not the kind of sore I’d suffered when I was The Escort. This was the delicious kind. No complaints on that score.

“Zara is going to think we’re very rude.”

“I couldn’t give a fuck what Zara thinks,” Mav came back with.

I twisted my head to look up at him. “I wish I were more like you.”

He gave me a crooked smile. “What, muscled and well-hung?”

“No.” I dug him in the ribs, and he pretended it hurt. “I wish I cared less what others thought.”

He kissed the top of my head. “We’ll work on it.”

A contented sigh filled my chest. “Zara thinks I worry too much as well. I think I drove her a bit mad while you were gone. I was just so scared that you wouldn’t come back or you’d get badly injured.” His arm tightened around me, and I decided to ask the burning question. “What happened?”

“He’s dead,” Mav stated in a cold tone that caused a tremor to echo down my spine. “It went far better than I thought. Jake and his men took out his security team, and I went after Forenti.” He took a deep breath. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say he wanted to die.”

I shifted my weight, allowing me to see him better. “What makes you say that?”

“Intuition, I guess. He had me right where he wanted me, a gun to the back of my head and—”

“He had a gun pointed at your head?” I screeched.

“Easy, angel.” Mav stroked my hair and held me a little closer. “I’m here. I’m unharmed.”

I nodded, calming myself with a deep, cleansing breath, and allowed Mav to continue.

“He could’ve pulled the trigger, and that would’ve been it. But he didn’t. He just ranted on about some shit and made it easy for me to take him. The whole thing was over in less than a minute.”

“I can’t say I’m sorry.”

Mav grinned, the first proper smile I’d seen since he came back. “See, we’ll fix this worrying shit in no time.”

“So, what happens now?” I asked.

He kissed me. “We go home. To Lilyhaven.”
